Family Newsletter week of 9/14/2023

Dear Brackett Families,

The second week of school has been incredible, and students are working hard in class as well as navigating new and old friendships. This Wednesday we had our first fire drill run by the Arlington fire department. Our community did a fantastic job walking quickly and silently and listening to their teachers and other trusted adults. Awesome! In addition, I'm sure you've seen our Fifth Grade Morning Safety Patrol helping our younger students into the building each morning. I'm so proud of these Brackett student leaders!

One change in routine that I am impressed with is the way that the community has embraced getting to school on time – lining up by 7:55 to enter by 8am. I know this can be tricky for some families (mine included at times!) and we – as grown ups – sometimes have to make the biggest shifts in how we organize our time in the mornings. Yet, being on time is important to how our children can enter the school day, ready to learn with their peers. Arriving on time helps students feel centered and less anxious. So thank you for working on this with us.

I was reminded of a New York Times article that came out in fall of 2020, when we were all readjusting to the structure of school in a different way. While I’m glad to not think about the setting up for remote learning, this article does point out that focusing on the morning, keeping things simple, and providing choice were strategies for making the transition to school easier.

Have a lovely evening.

Best,

Dr. Vice
